Tesla Road Trip - Nevada to Oregon - Part 2
Heading North out of Tonopah, you’ll drive through the Ghost
town of Mina and Luning. Both had active railways owned by Southern Pacific Railroads in the Late 1800’s. Luning is considered a ghost town but the town
still has residents living there.
Charge up in Hawthorne for the blitz to Reno – Hawthorne is probably best known for the massive Army Depot that came about after the Lake Denmark Naval Ammunition Disaster in 1926. The depot comprises over 147,000 acres and 400 buildings used for munitions storage.
Heading to downtown Hawthorne, make sure you visit the
Ordnance Museum. It’s full of Hawthorne’s
history and just amazing weaponry.
Heading north around Walker Lake, you’ll see what should be a
fun recreational area. Unfortunately,
due to drought and water allocation to agriculture, Walker Lake has lost over
50% of its surface area. The higher concentrations
of salt have effectively killed all the fish and this beautiful lake is now
considered dead. There are efforts to
restore the lake to its former glory but so far not much progress has been
made.
I got side tracked, lets attack Lake Tahoe. – I Had a quick
phone call with my good friend in Gardnerville and he convinced me to swing
by. The temptation of his wife’s homemade
apple pie sealed the deal, this will all be described in Part 3 😉
